"Best In Show" MAGD Expo Award Winner 2017
With this project we took Best In Show at UW Whitewater's Media arts and Game Developement showcase and competition.
What is Key Kingdom Souls?
Key Kingdom souls is a dungeon-crawler inspired 2D-Combat game. This was my Capstone project in my senior year of college at UW-Whitewater.
What I Did
I did all the art for Key kingdom souls. Which includes,
Why We Won
I talked to many of the judges to put together exactly why we won Best In Show.
We kept our design limited and cut a lot of original ideas out. We designed the game to be within our ability to complete on schedule. We were constantly looking at where our schedule was at and redefining it to make sure we made the best game we could.
This game was specifically targeted to win this competition. We built Key Kingdom Souls from the ground up to be played in a convention setting.
I really pushed myself to dive into pixel art and animation on this game. I did a significant amount of research and concepting before beginning. I experimented with color palettes and different pixel based lighting techniques. Examples below.
The main character was extremely complex. I worked hard to fully animate him in ways that felt natural to the player. Animations have to be snappy and responsive.
The phase 2 animation of the final boss is probably my favorite animation in this whole game. It is representative of the climax of Key Kingdom Souls and watching people freak out when they see this transition always makes me smile.
The book enemy was extremely fun and challenging to animate. The squash and stretch of this animation really gives impact to it's important moments.
Keyvi was created specifically to be super cute. She acts as a mascot for Key Kingdom Souls and she was extremely memorable to our players.
3D Printed Keyvis
I 3D-Modeled and printed these Keyvi Key-chains. Anyone who played our game would receive one.
Overall this game helped to further my team-building and game asset creation skills. It was really an exercise in what I can do and I want to push myself even further in the future.
